6 - 9 September 2022, Milano, Italy

Innovation 4.0 Institute is organizing in Milan, Italy, a new event – Societal Automation 2022. The event will look in a holistic way at the Societal Automation domain to identify what solutions, technologies, architectural frameworks, and design tools are going to be needed in the design, development and deployment of future human-centered life-quality improving solutions and systems.

Societal Automation 2022 will comprise: Summit of Experts with a focus on the design of Cities of the Future; Public Forum on Socio-Economic Aspects of Technology; and 3rd Inter. Conference on Societal Automation.

Societal Automation 2022 will be held at the premises of the Milano Innovative District – MIND, a Milano’s urban innovation complex (www.mindmilano.it)

Societal Automation 2022 is organized in cooperation with Fondazione Triulza, Milano, Italy; IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society; and Leandlease Group - Australian multinational construction, property and infrastructure company headquartered in Sydney, Australia.

26 - 28 May 2021 Funchal Madeira, Portugal

Innovation 4.0 Institute, together with University of Madeira, organized the 2nd International Conference on Societal Automation. The event scheduled for Funchal, Portugal, was held in the virtual space. For the objectives see news item about SA2019.

The main focus of the conference was on the design of Large-Scale Ultra-Complex Engineering Systems. A good example of such a system (LUES) is in the concept of the City of the Future. Cities of the Future – unlike Smart Cities which are largely an ICT retrofit of the constituent legacy systems (electric energy grid, communication networks, transportation system, etc.) – are going to be predominantly designed from scratch to a specification. At least the kernel of the urban ecosystem; followed by a subsequent continuous growth at the fringes governed by somehow semi-chaotic and conflicting requirements of different stakeholders.

The Conference featured eight (8) keynote and invited plenary presentations given by luminaries of academia and industry: Uwe Brinkschulte, The Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany; Luis Cabral, Leonard N. Stern School of Business, NYU, New York, USA; Ricardo Cabral, University of Lisbon, Portugal; Jörg Gebhardt, Senior Principal Scientist, ABB Corporate Research, Germany; Wolfgang Kastner, Vienna University of Technology, Austria; Marta Kwiatkowska, University of Oxford, UK; Roman Obermaisser, University of Siegen, Germany; and Alberto L. Sangiovanni- Vincentelli, University of California at Berkeley, USA.

In addition, the conference hosted five (5) panels on Blockchain and Cybersecurity, Design of Large- Scale Ultra Complex Engineering Systems, Smart Cities/Cities of the Future – the coming challenge, Economics of the Future of Work and Cities, Societal Automation – Quo Vadis.

The Conference was sponsored by IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society; University of Madeira, and Lisbon School of Economics, University of Lisbon.

4 - 6 September 2019, Krakow, Poland

Innovation 4.0 Institute organized, in cooperation with the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, an international conference on societal automation. The Conference, held on the AGH UST campus, was the first event in a series planned for the upcoming years attempting to look in a holistic way at the Societal Automation domain in order to try to determine what solutions, technologies, architectural frameworks, and design tools are going to be needed in the design, development and deployment of future human-centered life-quality improving solutions and systems (such as Cities of the Future, for instance), as well as economic aspects of innovation and new technology development.

The Conference featured a host of presentations by distinguished speakers from academia and industry, to mention: John S. Baras, Professor and Lockheed Martin Chair in Systems Engineering at the Institute for Systems Research, University of Maryland at College Park, USA; Prof. Rolf Ernst and Dr. Adam Kostrzewa from the Institute of Computer and Network Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany; Prof. Vincenzo Piuri, Fellow of the IEEE, Department of Computer Science, University of Milan, Italy; Prof. Jacek M. Zurada, Life Fellow of the IEEE, of the Computational Intelligence Laboratory & Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at the University of Louisville, USA; Dr. Martin Gilje Jaatun and Ravi Borgaonkar of SINTEF Digital, Norway; Dr. Jörg Gebhardt, Senior Principal Scientist at ABB Corporate Research, Germany; Dr. Athanasios Kalogeras of the Industrial Systems Institute, Athena R.C., Greece; Prof. Hervé Rivano of INSA Lyon in France; Prof. Luca Ferrarini, Politecnico di Milano, Italy; Prof. Wolfgang Kastner, Institute of Computer Engineering, Research Division - Automation Systems, Technical University of Vienna, Austria; and Richard Zurawski, Life Fellow of the IEEE, ISA Group, USA.

The Conference was sponsored by IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society; IEEE Poland Section, Chapters of the Computational Intelligence, Computer, Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, and Robotics and Automation Societies. Also by the Committee on Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
